Hi Loves! I am so excited to share this post with you! Recently, I was talking to someone about underarm care, and I realized how little I knew about this subject – which is crazy because underarm care is something we do every single day! It’s a part of our morning routine, whether we like it or not (aka razor burn – BOOOO!). So, I decided it was time to master the topic. I’ve teamed up with Dove to interview Dove Dermatologist, Dr. Alicia Barba, and ask her my top questions about proper underarm care and antiperspirants. I’ve included our interview below, but the conversation doesn’t have to stop here. If you have any comments or questions you would like to add – just comment below! 🙂
1. What is the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?
Deodorants mask odor and help keep the bacteria count low, while antiperspirants temporarily block the release of sweat from the sweat ducts. Salts found in antiperspirants dissolve into the skin and form a protective layer over the mouth of the sweat ducts, which reduces perspiration in the underarm.
2. What do you prefer to use and why?
I prefer an antiperspirants over deodorant any day, especially in hot and humid Miami. However, most products thankfully contain both! Which is much needed so that one maintains a fresh feel. I find that this is the case for the majority of women. Many of us really do need to stop the sweat with an antiperspirant.
3. How do antiperspirants work?
The way antiperspirants generally work is that the active ingredient temporarily blocks the release of sweat from the sweat ducts. The salts dissolve into the skin and forms a protective layer over the mouth of the sweat ducts, which reduces perspiration in the underarm.
4. What should women look for in an antiperspirant?
A good antiperspirant is an essential part to every woman’s beauty routine. Think about it, you put it on every single day! When selecting an antiperspirant, be sure to look for one that goes beyond odor and wetness protection. I recommend Dove Advanced Care because it offers 48 hour protection, plus added skincare benefits with its NutriumMoisture formula for softer, smoother underarms. It comes in a variety of different scents so that the odor is masked too.
5. Should we put deodorant on in the morning or at night?
You can put your antiperspirant on at any time of the day that is most convenient for you. If you have sensitive skin after shaving, it’s ideal to shave in the evening, and apply antiperspirant in the morning after your skin has had a chance to recover overnight. You can also look into a fragrance-free antiperspirant for sensitive skin that has moisturizers, which can be gentler on recently shaved skin.
6. What’s the best way to alleviate underarm issues when it comes to skin care?
Start by recognizing that this skin is sensitive and must be treated with care. If you feel shaving or waxing is contributing to irritation or darkening, consider a permanent hair removal method. Use antiperspirants that also contain moisturizers as your antiperspirant.
7. What’s the difference between “clinical strength” and regular?
Clinical strength antiperspirants contain a slightly higher concentration of the active ingredients: the aluminum based salts that temporarily block the sweat glands from releasing sweat.
